A sign sized to the logo instead of the sight line can end up illegible from the road, or too large to approve.
Materials, weather, and the cost that shows up later
Material affects the quote once and the maintenance conversation repeatedly. Aluminum and stainless steel cost more up front and hold their appearance outdoors better than the alternatives. Acrylic and PVC cost less and perform well indoors or in protected exterior positions such as a recessed wall or covered walkway.
Aluminum is the common pick for channel letter returns and outdoor faces: it resists corrosion, takes paint well, and sits mid-range on cost. Stainless reads as a premium finish on flat cut letters and lobby pieces. Acrylic works for lobby signs and channel letter faces and carries most illuminated color. PVC is lightweight and budget-friendly for interior dimensional letters. Painted MDO and HDU show up on monument faces and carved finishes.
One tradeoff worth understanding: painted PVC letters can look sharp on day one but may yellow or warp outdoors faster than aluminum equivalents. Even on a well-built exterior sign, LED modules, power supplies, and painted finishes may need service before the sign body does. Sun exposure, coastal air, and facade shade all change that timeline. Ask what a specific finish is rated for in your conditions, and ask what the warranty covers on the finish as opposed to the hardware.
Illumination and mounting scope
Illumination is rarely just a lighting choice. It adds LED modules, wiring, power supplies, a disconnect, and usually licensed electrical work at the wall, which can pull a separate electrical permit into the project. If power does not exist near the sign location, running it can rival the fabrication cost on an otherwise simple sign. That one question, whether there is a circuit where the sign is going, separates a lot of quotes that look similar otherwise.
Mounting is the other quiet variable. Brick and block take anchors directly but need clean patching if the sign ever moves. EIFS and foam-clad facades often need blocking or a backing plate because the surface itself carries no load. Metal panel systems may need internal structure located before layout is final. Glass usually calls for standoffs, vinyl, or film rather than penetrations. Raceways, wireway boxes, backer panels, and roof-mounted structures each add fabrication and install time.
A site photo is worth more to a quote than a paragraph of description. One taken straight on and one from the direction customers approach tells a shop about surface, existing conduit, obstructions, and how much of the facade is genuinely usable.
What a comparable quote breaks out
A quote you can actually compare shows scope as line items. When a proposal arrives as a single number, you cannot tell whether the lower bid is more efficient or simply smaller.
A proposal worth comparing identifies the design work and mockup revisions included, the material and finish specifications, the illumination and power supply scope, and the mounting method. It should also state whether delivery, freight, installation labor, lift equipment, site access, permit drawings, application fees, and electrical work are included or excluded. Warranty terms belong in the comparison as well, including what is covered and who does the service.
Read each line against the equivalent line in the other proposals rather than reading only the totals. If one shop excludes permit drawings and another includes them, you are not comparing the same project. A quote that assumes ladder access and one that budgets a lift are pricing two different days of work.
Permits, sign codes, and property approvals
Many exterior signs require a permit, and illuminated signs may require an electrical permit as well. Requirements vary by property, municipality, zoning district, and project scope. Confirm with your local authority before committing to a design. Attachment to a building exterior, illumination, a freestanding structure, height or area above a local threshold, and placement in a historic district or zoning overlay are the conditions that most often bring a sign into review.

Reducing scope without reducing quality
If budget is the constraint, cut scope rather than quality. Non-illuminated flat cut aluminum or acrylic letters on a clean, well-lit facade can look polished at a lower relative cost than an illuminated equivalent. Dropping illumination may be realistic when the storefront has strong ambient light and customers arrive during daylight hours. It is a poor fit for a business that depends on evening visibility, and that call should follow when your customers actually show up rather than the sign budget alone.
Other levers hold up visually. Fewer letters at a larger scale read better than more letters crowded into the same band. One strong material looks more deliberate than mixed finishes. High-contrast color pairing does more for legibility than detail work does. A flush mount avoids the fabrication and visual weight of a raceway where the wall allows it. Vinyl window graphics can carry hours, services, and secondary messaging while the primary sign stays simple.
Separate what has to be right on day one from what can follow. A legible primary sign and a compliant install are day one items. A second blade sign, interior dimensional letters, or a full window program can often come later without anyone noticing the project was phased.
