From the sidewalk, an illuminated cabinet sign looks simple: a box, a face, and a light behind it. Most of the trouble starts with details you cannot see from there.
A face material gets chosen before anyone asks how the sign will be cleaned. A lighting layout gets specified before anyone confirms how the face comes out. Power is assumed to be available at the wall. Each of those gaps tends to reappear later as a change order, a second trip, or a cabinet that reads unevenly next to the one beside it.
Settle these questions while the project is still on paper, whether you are specifying a new cabinet or refacing one that is already mounted.
What to inspect before you reface an existing cabinet
Refacing may sound like the simpler job. But the new face still has to fit a cabinet that has spent years outdoors.
Record the cabinet as it stands today
Work through the sign and write down what you can observe from the ground, without climbing or reaching:
- overall cabinet width, height, and depth, with a note on how each figure was obtained
- whether the cabinet is single faced or double faced, and whether both faces carry the same artwork
- the face material currently installed, if an old drawing or invoice names it
- the retainer or frame system holding the face in place, and whether it looks original
- face condition: crazing, discoloration, bowing, cracks, patched areas, or a face that no longer sits flat in the frame
- cabinet condition: corrosion, water staining, open seams, failed sealant, or a section that has clearly been repaired before
- how the sign is mounted, what sits directly beneath it, and what a crew would have to work around
- whether the cabinet lights at all, and whether any area of the face reads noticeably darker than the rest
Photograph each face straight on from a consistent distance, then take a wider view showing the sign and its setting. For a lit cabinet, photograph it in daylight and again after dark. Uneven output rarely shows up during the day.
Leave the inside of the cabinet to a qualified party
Do not open the cabinet, remove a retainer, or work at height to inspect it. An illuminated cabinet holds energized components, and anything that needs a ladder, a lift, or access to those components belongs with a qualified party. If part of the face is dark, record that it is dark and photograph it. Do not diagnose the cause from the parking lot, and do not let a quote request turn into an informal repair attempt.
Find whatever paperwork still exists
Original sign drawings, earlier permit records, previous vendor invoices, lease sign criteria, and recorded property restrictions answer questions photographs cannot: the original face material, the approved sign area, the cabinet dimensions somebody once drew, and what the jurisdiction reviewed last time. Older properties often have gaps in those files. Say so in the quote request rather than letting an unverified assumption travel forward as a specification.
Acrylic and polycarbonate faces
Where each material tends to come up
Acrylic and polycarbonate are both used for illuminated faces, and they are not interchangeable. Acrylic is the more common starting point for flat and formed faces where the priority is a clean, consistent appearance and predictable fabrication. Polycarbonate usually enters the conversation when impact is the concern: a cabinet mounted within reach, a location with a history of damage, or a face large enough that handling it is itself a risk.
Thickness, forming behavior, cost, available finishes, and accepted cleaning methods differ between the two. So does the way each behaves after years of sun and weather exposure. An article cannot tell you how a specific sheet will perform at your address, and neither can a general durability statement in a sales conversation. Ask for the manufacturer's published data for the exact product being quoted, and treat that data as the reference rather than a verbal comparison.
What to confirm with the fabricator
Put these details in the quote or approved drawing, not only in an email thread:
- the exact material, grade, and thickness supplied for each face
- whether the face is flat, pan formed, or embossed, since forming affects both material selection and tooling
- the graphics method: digitally printed, applied translucent vinyl, routed and backed, or a combination
- first-surface or second-surface printing, plus the specified finish
- a named color reference for every element, because a color approved on a monitor is not a production reference
- how the face is expected to read after dark as well as in daylight, since a translucent face looks different when the light sits behind it
- the overall face size and the visible opening that remains after the retainer covers the edges
- who verifies fit against the existing cabinet, and who carries the cost if the finished face does not seat correctly
- the cleaning methods the material supplier considers acceptable, so routine maintenance does not damage the face
A quote that leaves out these details may simply be describing a different product.

Lighting and diffusion questions
Even illumination is a layout question
Uneven light usually traces back to the relationship between the light source, the space behind the face, and the face material itself. Components set close to the face relative to their spread can read as bright spots. Components spaced too far apart can leave darker bands between them. A shallow cabinet gives the light less distance to blend across; a deeper one gives more. The diffusion characteristics of the face material and any applied graphics change what finally reaches the street.
None of that can be settled from a photograph or from an article. It is a design question for whoever is laying out the lighting for your cabinet depth, your face size, and your face material.
Ask for the specification, not a brightness promise
- What lighting components are included, and how are they arranged inside this cabinet?
- What distance sits between those components and the face at the proposed depth?
- Is the layout being designed for this face size and material, or carried over from a standard cabinet?
- What color temperature is specified, and does it need to match adjacent signs on the same building?
- If the cabinet is double faced, is each side lit and powered separately?
- Where do the power supplies sit, how many are there, and what do they serve?
- On a reface, is anything behind the face included in the price, or is this a faces-only quote?
- How is the finished sign reviewed after dark, and what is the path if a section reads unevenly?
Ask for the specification and the review path. Do not ask a provider to guarantee a brightness level, uniformity result, energy figure, or service life. If a quote offers one of those guarantees, get the exact conditions and exclusions in writing.
Keep lighting design separate from electrical work
Designing a lighting layout inside a cabinet and supplying power to that cabinet are different scopes with different owners. A sign provider may specify components and internal wiring while a licensed electrician handles the circuit, the disconnect, and the final connection, and the jurisdiction may require inspection of that work. Do not let one line item labeled "lighting" stand in for both.
Depth, retainers, and reaching the parts that fail
Someone will eventually need to reach every component inside the cabinet. The physical details that make this possible are easy to skim past during a quote review, but they need to be settled during design.
Depth and face size
Depth drives the lighting layout described above, and it also decides what fits: components, power supplies, wiring runs, and the internal framing that carries them. Face size drives handling. A large single-piece face can need more people, more clearance, and different equipment than two smaller faces filling the same opening. Ask whether the face is one piece or divided, and what that choice means the next time one section has to come out.
Retainers and how a face comes out
Ask directly how a face is removed and reinstalled: hinged frame, removable retainer bar, slide track, or a system the original fabricator no longer supplies. Ask whether one face can come out without disturbing the opposite face, whether replacement retainer hardware is still available for an older cabinet, and whether removal has to happen from the front. Front access usually means equipment, a controlled work zone below, and scheduling around the property's business hours.
Ventilation, drainage, and component layout
Cabinets collect heat and water. Ask where the cabinet vents and drains, whether those openings can be blocked by the mounting condition, by debris, or by later work on the building, and who is expected to check them. Ask how components are mounted inside: whether one failed component can be replaced on its own, whether the wiring is routed so a replacement does not require dismantling a whole section, and whether power supplies are grouped where they can be reached. A layout can be quick to build and awkward to service.
Who has to answer each site question
Several parties can touch one cabinet project. The division depends on the property, the lease, and each provider's stated scope, so assign these in writing instead of assuming that somebody already has them. Some answers are not the sign provider's to give at all: a landlord or property manager controls what the lease and sign criteria allow, a municipality controls whether the work needs review, and a licensed electrician controls the connection.

Two quotes can both say "new faces and lighting" and describe different work. Ask each provider to mark every item below as included, excluded, or handled under a separate scope:

Read the exclusions before comparing the totals. A quote can look lower because it stops earlier, and a responsibility boundary left blank usually becomes the buyer's boundary.
What to gather before requesting a quote
You can request an initial conversation without every item below. Each confirmed detail removes an assumption from the estimate.
- property address, plus a description of how and from where the sign is normally seen
- photographs of each face straight on, a wider view of the sign in its setting, and night photographs for a lit cabinet
- overall cabinet dimensions and depth, with a note on how they were obtained
- number of faces, mounting condition, and approximate height above grade
- known details about the existing face material, retainer system, and lighting
- any position or area that currently reads dark, described rather than diagnosed
- copies of original drawings, permits, prior invoices, or lease sign criteria if they exist

Plan the rest of the cabinet's life
Set the service expectations before the sign is built
- Decide who cleans the face, how often, and with a method the material supplier accepts.
- Decide how somebody reports a dark section, and who receives that report.
- Decide who checks the sign after dark on a regular basis, since a partial outage is easy to miss during business hours.
- Decide whether spare faces or components are stocked with the current order or ordered one at a time later.
- Keep one record for the cabinet: dimensions, face material and thickness, graphics method, color references, artwork file location, lighting specification, order date, and vendor. The next request then starts from known information instead of another round of measuring.
- If the property has several cabinets, keep that record for each of them and note where the specifications differ.
Check the drawing before production
Before approving anything for production, compare the legal business name, spelling, phone number, suite number, and every other displayed detail against a source the tenant confirms. Match the drawing dimensions to the quote, and keep the overall face size separate from the visible opening. Confirm each color against the agreed reference rather than its appearance on a screen. Confirm the illumination expectation in writing for every lit section.
